with Alene Valkanas October 8, 16, 30

About this Course

A series of webinars to help board members and executive directors develop and sustain engaged, forward-looking governance for their cultural institutions.  Nonprofit governance is more complex and demanding than ever before, requiring updated - even innovative - ways to get board work done and keep organizations healthy.  Leading by Design addresses how to build a board recruitment program, how to incorporate training into the work of the board, and how to approach board leadership succession.

Who serves on a board is more than simply finding a warm body to fill a seat.  Your board is part of your organization's human capital, an asset that pays off big when infused with care and feeding.  This webinar will discuss the cycle of board recruitment, orientation and assessment.  We'll talk about blending and building competencies, the role of the board development committee, and some tools that you can use right away.

Some may argue that a project-driven organization is a way to keep boards and executives engaged. While projects bring energy all their own, the risk is burn-out.  Momentum is best maintained by reaching a balance between "doing" and "understanding why we're doing this is important".  Both are important to developing the human capital around the board table, but it's the second piece -- the understanding piece -- we'll focus on.  We'll talk about various ways to engage boards and staff leaders in developing the intellectual capacity needed for this work, from retreats to "guerilla training".

BOARD LEADERSHIP SUCCESSION

Board leaders come and go.....or come and never leave.  As much as we might try to prepare for the orderly succession of board presidents, officers, and committee chairpeople, too few organizations allow themselves enough time to think through and articulate their future board leadership needs.  How can busy organizations create space for these discussions?  What are the likely outcomes your organization can expect when board leadership succession is designed and managed?
