About this course
In the next five years two-thirds of executive directors of arts organizations will retire or leave their positions. As baby boomers depart their leadership roles, there are concrete steps board and staff can take to ensure organizational continuity before, during and after the transition. These three sessions will present for discussion the issues and the actions that board and staff can take to ensure a smooth transition.

About Instructor
Alene Valkanas
Alene Valkanas is a recognized national leader in nonprofit advocacy and management and a pioneer in the developing field of transition planning. She brings work experience, from chairing a search committee to working with nonprofit boards and staff on the transition process.
She combines these experiences and long term research in the field of leadership succession to the development of a curricula designed for professional presentations. Her consulting in capacity building is informed by 35 years in nonprofit management. Valkanas recently retired as the executive director of the Illinois Arts Alliance (IAA) where she served for 20 years and spearheaded a six year project responding to issues of the transfer of power to the next generation. Valkanas is a founding member and officer of the Washington-based Center for Lobbying in the Public Interest, a founding chair of the State Arts Action Network, a former officer of the Donors Forum of Chicago, and was an important leader of the State Arts Advocacy League of America.
